Overview

How it works
With the queen inside, she can lay eggs only on that one frame and can’t get out. With the queen outside, she can’t lay on the isolated frame. Either way, workers move freely through the bars and keep caring for the brood.
Key uses
- Holding the queen in a new swarm or package so the colony doesn’t abscond
- Creating a broodless period for mite treatments by limiting the queen to one removable frame
- Slowing brood production before a nectar dearth
- Getting eggs or brood of a known age
- Keeping the queen easy to find on a single frame
Important notes
- Insert and remove the frame slowly when the queen is inside so she isn’t injured.
- The cage takes the space of two standard frames. A deep frame goes inside, and the solid cover rests on its top bar.
- Check that the top edges sit flush with your hive body. If they don’t, seal the gaps beside the top bar with beeswax so the queen can’t escape.
